"WHO IS FONZY!?! Don't they teach you anything at school?"

It has been a busy week at work, hence the infrequent posting. I will get back on the ball, once I discover a worm hole in my home that allows me to travel back in time.

Or I guess I could just come home from work earlier. Yea, that’s the ticket!

Cat Stevens is Dead

I love, and I truly mean love, Cat Steven’s “Tea for the Tillerman”. It is one of the my favorite records and has been since I viewed the LP sleeve on my father's turntable. The music inside this wonderful cover only reinforced my love for the record. I spent many evenings looking at it after I had finished my homework, examining it as if it were some biblical text, listening to it as if it was vital to my existence. The record has shaped my taste and understanding of this world like few have.

I collected every record Cat Steven’s made in my college years, trying to relive that utopic feeling his music gave me as a child. His records still hold a spot in my heart, and I play them routinely. He is one of the greatest folk/pop singers in recent memory. I love Cat Steven’s music with a passion.

That is why it hurts me so to avoid his new record. I am sure that it is filled with many great rhymes and melodies, but I must pass it up. As much as I love good music, I also believe the best way to change popular culture and popular genres is to vote with your feet and pocketbooks. Therefore, I can not buy Yusuf Islam’s music.

Yusuf is a man that has called for the death of a man because he criticized his faith,(Concerning Salman Rushdie, "I might ring somebody who might do more damage to him than he would like. I'd try to phone the Ayatollah Khomeini and tell him exactly where this man is.") A man who has preformed fundraisers for groups connected to terrorist organizations. A man who believes women should hide their beauty from men underneath a shroud.

It is the man he has become that I can no longer financially support, and that saddens me to no end. To have one who has created some of the most powerful pop music in my life, and yet I can not partake in his recent endeavors. That hurts me.

But it is important to stand against theocrats like Yusuf, and my buying power means something in this society, and I plan to use it.

I leave you with why I love Cat Stevens, and I am sure his previous genius will shine through his current nonsense.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the Bush

(Clever title, no?)

U.S. Embassy Asks Bush Twins to Leave Country

Stories of the twins' visit took on wild proportions in the Argentinean press. One tabloid headline had the young women running nude in the hallway of their hotel, a report the hotel staff denied to ABC News.

Now if photos of such a stunt surfaced, that would make for some good punditry!

"Those poor Bush twins. Why won’t this world just let them party?"

Because we are a nation at war, and for a President that has asked so much of many young men and women, to have his daughters travel about acting like spoiled sorority girls just goes to show how disconnected many folks are from reality. The truth is most American’s are not at war; the American military is. It is rather sad that the President asks so very little of the populace, let alone his own daughters.

To be honest, it doesn’t bother me that the Bush twins drink and have a good time. Lord knows I try to do so when the opportunity provides itself. But Bush and his family must know that they are our people’s representatives, whether they like it or not. Fair? Not really, but that is the price First Children pay. Bush should rein his daughters in for the good of the country.

Not only do I miss Bill Clinton, I also miss his daughter Chelsea and the example she set.

Django Reinhardt

Need one say more? What a great musician, and a nice break from my normal bitching about the world.

Skip James - Devil Got My Woman

One of the greatest American Bluesmen, playing an intimate house show in the 60’s. Enjoy!
